Gaylord Box Shapes: Rectangular vs. Octagonal

Gaylord boxes come in two shapes: rectangular and octagonal.

Rectangular boxes are easy to handle and maintain their shape well, making them ideal for machinery use.

Octagonal boxes have reinforced corners for better weight distribution and are suited for irregular-shaped items like plastics, produce or mixed merchandise. If you're choosing between octagonal Gaylords and octabins, see our Gaylord vs octabin guide.

.

Types of Gaylord Boxes

Gaylord boxes come in a variety of styles that cater to various storage and transport needs. While standard Gaylord boxes are commonly used for general bulk storage and shipping, specialized varieties may feature additional reinforcements, liners, or coatings to accommodate items like hazardous materials, food products, or high-weight loads.

Produce: Vented for air circulation, these are used to transport fresh fruits and vegetables. We stock produce Gaylord boxes in a range of sizes.

Resin: Coated for durability and ideal for transporting damp products.

Combo: Octagonal bulk bins with a moisture-resistant interior coating safe for direct food contact, commonly used in bulk protein and poultry operations. Available in configurations for short in-plant moves through triple-wall builds for extended transit.

HPT-41: A laminated bulk bin with an octagonal liner inside a rectangular outer case. Browse our current HPT-41 inventory.

HAZMAT: Built for hazardous materials, these meet safety regulations for secure handling.

Pumpkin bins: Gaylord boxes used for pumpkin harvest and transport. View pumpkin bins for sale, or read our late-season pumpkin sourcing tips if you're buying ahead of fall.

Watermelon bins: Used for watermelon harvest and transport. See watermelon bins by size.

Wall Size Options: 2-Wall to 5-Wall

Consider the following when determining which Gaylord boxes are best for your needs:

2-Wall: Features two layers of corrugated board, offering moderate strength for lightweight or less fragile goods. Browse our 2-wall Gaylord boxes.

3-Wall: Built with three layers, providing enhanced durability and better protection for medium-weight loads. Also known as tri-wall. Browse 3-wall Gaylord boxes, or read our complete tri-wall guide for load ratings and applications.

4-Wall: Consists of four layers of corrugated material, suitable for heavier products requiring increased support and stability.

5-Wall: The strongest option, with five layers of corrugated board, ideal for heavy or high-risk shipments requiring maximum protection. View our 5-wall inventory. Not sure which wall count fits your use case? See our guide on why wall count matters.

Gaylord Box Bottom Styles

The bottom of a Gaylord box impacts its stability, strength, and ease of use, with different styles offering varying levels of support:

Full: Full flaps fold over one another and cover the entire bottom of a Gaylord.

Partial: Partial flaps also fold over one another but cover only part of the bottom.

Insert: A cardboard insert can be used to cover the gap left by partial flaps.

Domelock: Domelock bottoms have interlocking flaps that help stabilize the box.

FAQs

How much do Gaylord boxes cost?

Pricing across our inventory ranges from $6 to $22 per box, depending on wall strength, condition, and quantity. New boxes cost more than used, and bulk orders typically reduce the per-box rate. Each listing shows its own per-box price and truckload rate.

What's the difference between new and used Gaylord boxes?

New Gaylord boxes are unused and ship from current production. Used Gaylord boxes have been previously deployed but inspected and selected for usable condition. Used inventory typically costs less per box and is the most common purchase across our marketplace. Each listing specifies condition and notes any defects. Browse current used Gaylord box inventory to see what's available now.

What sizes of Gaylord boxes do you carry?

Most of our Gaylord boxes match the standard 48×40 GMA pallet footprint, with heights ranging from 24 to 60 inches. We stock 2-wall through 5-wall construction across rectangular and octagonal shapes, plus specialty formats including HPT-41 laminated bulk bins and food-grade Combo bins. For all standard sizes and footprint variations, see our complete dimensions guide.

Which wall count is right for my load?

Wall count drives both load capacity and price. 2-wall is suited to lightweight or less fragile goods. 3-wall (also called tri-wall) handles medium-weight loads with better protection. 5-wall offers maximum strength for heavy or high-risk shipments. For a full decision framework, see why wall count matters when choosing Gaylord boxes.

How do I get a quote for bulk Gaylord boxes?

Every listing has a Request Quote button that captures your location, quantity, and delivery preferences. Quotes come back with per-box pricing, total truckload cost, and a delivery estimate for your specific order. For larger orders or recurring needs, you can also call (708) 398-9067 to reach our sales team directly.

Do you buy used Gaylord boxes?

Yes. Verde Trader buys used Gaylord boxes and arranges pickup. Get a quote for selling your inventory, or call (708) 398-9067 to talk through your specific lot.

Do you ship Gaylord boxes nationwide?

Yes, to all 48 states. Shipping mode depends on order size and how the boxes are banded and stacked. For smaller orders of around 50 boxes or fewer, we deliver by LTL carrier or local box truck, and customer pickup is also available at the box location. Orders in the 50 to 100 box range may ship by box truck, LTL, or full truckload, depending on box size and stacking method. Larger orders over 100 boxes go on a full 53-foot dry van, since variations in supplier banding and stacking make partial loads impractical at that volume. Each listing shows pickup location and shipping terms specific to that lot

How much does shipping cost?

For box truck and full truckload (FTL) shipments, we charge a flat $500 for any distance under 100 miles, regardless of order size. Beyond 100 miles, those modes run $3 to $5 per mile depending on the market. LTL shipments are quoted case by case, since the rate varies with the LTL market, pallet size, and shipping distance. Your final shipping cost appears in every quote before you commit, so there are no surprises at checkout

Find Gaylord Boxes For Sale Near You

Verde Trader lists used Gaylord box inventory in cities across all 48 states. Customer pickup at the box location is available on most listings, or we arrange nationwide shipping at a flat $500 rate under 100 miles and $3 to $5 per mile beyond that.

Short answer: Use an RSC (regular slotted container) for case-packed, parcel-friendly shipments; opt for a pallet-sized bulk bin (often called a “Gaylord”) for heavy, loose, or consolidated product that moves by forklift.

image

In the world of packaging procurement, terms like pallet box, Gaylord box, octabin, and bulk bin often overlap, leading to confusion. This guide provides an authoritative breakdown based on industry standards, historical context, and technical insights to help you navigate these distinctions effectively.

image

In industrial packaging, tri-wall boxes — also called triple wall Gaylord containers — set the standard for durability, compression strength, and sustainability. Constructed with three layers of corrugated fluting (seven-ply total structure), these Gaylord boxes are engineered to support heavy loads up to 2,000 lbs, making them essential in manufacturing, defense, and logistics sectors.

image

From our experience, Gaylords are corrugated, heavy-duty, reusable bulk bins for real load-bearing. A bulk cargo container can technically be a Gaylord, but most boxes sold as “bulk cargo containers” are lighter capacity and intended for single use. Similarly, many bulk cargo bins with a pallet-sized footprint are described as “Gaylords,” but lack the weight capacity and bulge resistance of a true Gaylord box

image

When shipping goods in bulk, the terms "Gaylord box" and "Octabin" are often used, but they aren't always interchangeable. While both are heavy-duty containers designed for pallet-sized loads, the octabin offers specialized advantages for specific applications. This guide will clarify the meaning, features, and key differences to help you choose the right packaging.

image

Pumpkin Bins can be plentiful before Halloween, then tighten quickly. After October 31, surplus consolidates at wholesalers while retail demand pivots to pies and baking. The window is short. Prioritize speed, clear specs, and flexible freight. For storage do’s and don’ts (temperature, humidity, and handling), lean on research-backed guides like UC Davis Postharvest (pumpkin & winter squash) and the USDA ARS Commercial Storage manual.

image

Not all Gaylord boxes are built the same—and wall count is one of the biggest factors that determines how they perform. Whether you’re shipping lightweight recyclables or dense industrial materials, the number of walls directly affects how much weight a box can carry, how many times it can be reused, and how well it stacks in storage or transit.

image

Whether you’re selling or buying Gaylord boxes for bulk storage, one of the most common questions is about cost. Prices vary between new and used boxes, and within those groups, specialty designs like produce bins or HPT-41 models may shift the range. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect when it comes to cost and value.

image

If your warehouse or facility has a surplus of Gaylord boxes, you don’t have to let them go to waste. Instead of paying for disposal or recycling, you can sell them. At Verde Trader, we buy Gaylord boxes directly from businesses, making the process simple and efficient.

image

If you work in manufacturing, recycling, food processing, or large-scale distribution, chances are you’ve come across the term Gaylord box. But what does “Gaylord” mean, why are they called that, and where can you buy them? This guide answers those questions and highlights the role Gaylord boxes play in industrial packaging.

image

Gaylord box dimensions refer to length × width × height of a bulk corrugated container built to sit on a pallet. In North America, 48" × 40" is the most common footprint; height is selected for the job at hand. The key is to match interior space to your product and handling method, then confirm that the full outside dimensions fit your aisles, racks, and trucks.
