What is an used gaylord box?

Used Gaylord boxes is an used pallet-sized bulk corrugated cardboard containers designed for the handling, storing, and transporting of bulk intermediate materials like loose parts and granular items in the agricultural, food, and plastics industries.

Gaylord boxes are also called skid or pallet boxes, pallet containers, or octabins, but Gaylord is the packaging industry term.

Wall Thickness

Various wall types and thicknesses can be found in used gaylord boxes. They are typically constructed with 2 to 5 layers of cardboard. In general, used 5-wall octabin boxes that formerly contained plastic pellets are the most readily available used Gaylord boxes.

2 Ply: The two-wall box is the most common and thinnest type. Their construction consists of two layers of fluting. Despite having a smaller carrying capacity, these boxes are significantly cheaper than those with thicker walls.

3 Ply: The triple-wall Gaylord container comes in many shapes, bottom types, and dimensions. They are made up of three layers of corrugated cardboard and come in a wide range of thicknesses. In comparison to all other choices, triple wall cardboard boxes offer the largest selection.

4 Ply: The majority of used 4 ply gaylords consist of three separate parts laminated together. There is an outer box, part A, and an inner liner, B. This innermost layer has an octagonal shape that allows for a corner post pocket in Part C.

5 Ply: Five-walled boxes are among the strongest. The construction of these boxes is similar to that of three-wall boxes, but feature an additional layer and fluting. In reality, these are three walled boxes, 5ply boxes have two layers of double wall corrugated with an additional single layer. This gives the illusion that there are five walls.

Flaps & Shape

Flaps. Used gaylords most commonly have Partial flaps which include a slip sheet that goes in the bottom of the box. Some have Full flap options eliminate the need for a slip sheet.

Shape. Used Gaylords can be purchased in square, rectangular, or octagonal shapes.

Weight capacity. The weight capacity of a used gaylord box will depend on its dimensions and wall thickness but they can typically hold up 500 to 5000 pounds of material.
