Plastic pallets overview
A plastic pallet is a molded shipping and storage platform, typically built from HDPE or polypropylene instead of wood. It works well for repeated-use shipping and storage across food, pharmaceutical, and industrial supply chains, thanks to a non-porous surface that resists moisture, pests, and chemical exposure far better than a single-use wood pallet. Its consistent size and weight also make it a good fit for automated handling systems, and because it holds up through many more cycles than wood, it is often the more cost-effective and sustainable choice over the long run.
Is a plastic pallet right for me?
This lightweight, hygienic pallet is a good fit for buyers who ship or store product repeatedly rather than once, and it is widely used across export, food and beverage, and retail display supply chains.
Common users of plastic pallets include:
- Exporters - avoid the ISPM-15 heat-treatment paperwork that wood pallets require for international shipments.
- Beverage bottlers and distributors - non-porous, washable surface holds up to repeated cold-chain and wet-environment use.
- Retail and point-of-sale display companies - lighter weight and cleaner appearance than wood for customer-facing pallets.
- Drum and chemical container handlers - built to carry round, top-heavy loads securely.
- Food processors - nonporous surface resists moisture, odors, and bacteria in ways raw wood cannot.
- Pharmaceutical and healthcare distributors - steam-cleanable and free of splinters or nails, useful where contamination control matters.
- Automotive and industrial manufacturers - consistent size and weight support automated conveyor and robotic handling systems.
- Third-party logistics (3PL) providers - durability across many reuse cycles lowers per-trip cost versus one-way wood pallets.
Built for use on pallet racks, these pallets have a reinforced structure that provides stability and support for heavy loads.
Designed for secure stacking, these pallets have a flat bottom that allows them to be safely placed on top of one another.
Featuring a space-saving design, these pallets have feet that fit into each other when stacked.
Forklift Entry Styles: 2-Way vs. 4-Way Pallets
These pallets come in 2-way and 4-way entry designs, each with distinct benefits. The right choice depends on your handling equipment, storage needs, and load requirements:
- 2-way entry offers stability for heavy loads but limit maneuverability, allowing access from only two sides.
- 4-way entry provides access from all sides, enhancing versatility and efficiency in tight warehouse spaces.
Top Deck Designs
The top deck design of a plastic pallet plays an important role in its functionality, and different industries require specific deck styles to accommodate their storage, transportation, and hygiene needs. The three main types of top decks are open, closed, and drum, each offering unique advantages.
Features a ventilated or slotted surface, reducing weight and allowing for airflow, easy cleaning, and liquid drainage.
Has a solid, flat surface that provides better support for small items and prevents debris buildup.
Designed with recessed areas or grooves to hold drums securely in place, ensuring stability during storage and transport.
Bottom Deck Designs
Plastic pallets come with different bottom deck configurations designed to suit various handling and storage needs.
| Static load capacity | 500-8,000 lbs |
| Dynamic load capacity | 300-4,000 lbs |
| Racking load capacity | Up to 2,500 lbs |
| Most common footprint | 48 x 40 in |
| Material | HDPE or PE |
Size and capacity
Plastic pallets come in a range of sizes and support static loads between 500 and 8,000 lbs, depending on construction and footprint.
Common sizes
- 48x40 in: the most common footprint in our inventory, typically rated 1,500-8,000 lbs static load - pairs cleanly with standard GMA racking and warehouse systems.
- 43x43 in: the compact export/drum-handling size, typically rated up to 5,000 lbs - a good fit where a smaller footprint or square load suits the shipment better.
- 1100x1100mm: the international/export standard size, typically rated 500-5,000 lbs - matches ISO shipping container and overseas pallet-exchange requirements.
- 56x44 in: the oversized option, rated up to 8,000 lbs - used for heavier or bulkier loads that need extra surface area.

Frequently asked questions about plastic pallets
What is a plastic pallet?
A plastic pallet is a molded shipping and storage platform used in place of wood. Most of our current inventory is HDPE (high-density polyethylene), with the rest built from PE blends. Because every unit of the same size and material is molded the same way, load ratings stay consistent from one pallet to the next, unlike wood, which varies by lumber quality and moisture content.
How much weight can a plastic pallet hold?
It depends on how the load is measured. Static load is what a pallet can support sitting still (up to 8,000 lbs on our largest options), dynamic load is what it can safely carry while being moved by forklift (up to 4,000 lbs), and racking load is what it can hold on a warehouse rack, which is almost always the lowest of the three (up to 2,500 lbs). Larger, closed-deck pallets typically rate higher across all three measures.
Should I get an open deck or closed deck plastic pallet?
Open deck pallets have a ventilated or slotted surface, which reduces weight and allows drainage and airflow, a good fit for wet environments or loads that need ventilation. Closed deck pallets have a solid, flat surface that better supports small or loose items and keeps out debris, which suits retail display or products that could fall through slots. Most of our current inventory is open deck; closed deck typically runs at the higher end of our pricing.
How much do used plastic pallets cost?
Pricing depends mainly on size, deck type, and condition. Browse our full current selection and pricing on the used plastic pallets page.
Are plastic pallet sizes the same as wood pallet sizes?
Often, yes. Our most common plastic pallet size, 48x40 in, matches the GMA standard used for most wood pallets in North America, so it typically fits existing wood-pallet racking, trucks, and warehouse systems without modification. Other sizes, such as 43x43 in and 1100x1100mm, follow export and specialty standards rather than the domestic wood-pallet norm.
Are plastic pallets sold individually or only in bulk?
Both. Plastic pallets on Verde Trader can be purchased individually at the listed per-unit price, or in larger quantities up to full truckload (typically 200-400 units per 53' dry van), depending on the listing.
