About GMA Pallets

GMA pallets today refer to a broad range of pallet designs, as long as they measure 48 x 40. Several different types of decking are available, including soft or hard wood, blocks and stringers, different deckboard arrangements, and more. Approximately 40% of U.S. pallets are GMA. In addition, the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) recognizes them as a standard size.

A GMA pallet was traditionally made from hardwood, had specific types of deckboards, used only stringers, and had other specific features. GMA pallets became more popular as 48 x 40s grew in popularity, so the standard only determines GMA pallets based on their overall length and width.

New GMAs

New GMA pallets are high-quality, have guaranteed performance and do not have any signs of wear. Recycled pallets, or ones that have been previously repaired, are classified by a quality grade. This grading is based on the number of repairs the pallet has received.

Recycled or Repaired GMA

Because GMA pallets are so widely used, they are readily available used or recycled. Most companies that sell recycled GMA pallets have grading standards for used pallets. These grades are a useful guide if you’re buying recycled pallets, although they aren’t standardized. These guides cover the general appearance of the pallet, its structural integrity, GMA compliance, and any repairs that were performed to the pallet. The grades are generally as follows:

Premium Plus “00” “A” Grade

These are recycled pallets of the highest quality. They can be used to display groceries. They have no stringer damage at all. They have seven top deck boards and five bottom deck boards. The deck boards are 9/16 inch thick. There top and bottom lead boards are 5-1/2 inches wide and the others are 3-1/2 wide. These basically look brand new. They haven’t had and don’t need any repairs.

Premium “01” “A” Grade

These pallets meet the same specifications as Premium Plus but may not look quite as new. They are still in excellent shape and in almost new condition.

Plus “02” “A” Grade

Rounding out the top A grade category, these pallets are structurally sound, meet all of the specifications as Premium and Premium Plus categories but may have slightly more cosmetic wear. They are in very good condition and haven’t had or needed any repairs.

Standard “04” “A” Grade

This is the first of the standard A-grade pallets. They may have limited stringer damage. The repairs were done with a corrugated metal plate or staples. They have deck boards that are 9/16 inch thick with lead boards that are 3-1/2 inches wide on the top and bottom. The other boards are 3-1/2 inches wide as well.

Standard “05” “A” Grade

This is the last of the A-grade pallets. The specifications for this grade are the same as for a Standard 04 grade, but it may be in slightly worse shape. These pallets may need repairs soon.

Premium “07” “B” Grade

This is the first B-grade pallet. Pallets with a B grade are still sturdy and reliable, but have had some repairs and have some cosmetic damage as well. They still have full weight-bearing capacity. These may have been repaired with a corrugated metal plate or an attached stringer placed alongside the damaged one. Premium B grade pallets may have one corrugated metal plate or staple repair and one block or partial runner stringer repair. They have 9/16 inch thick deck boards, top and bottom lead boards that are 3-1/2 inches wide, and the other deck boards are 3-1/2 or 5-1/2 inches wide.

Plus “08” “B” Grade

These B-grade pallets meet the same specifications as the Premium B-grade pallets but they may have up to two block or partial runner stringer repairs.

Basic “09” “B” Grade

This is the lowest grade of recycled GMA pallets. These pallets are best suited for short-term use. They have the same specifications as other B-grade pallets but they may have up to three block or partial runner stringer repairs.
